Shuttocks Hill Trig Point

For the Shuttocks Hill trig point bag, I parked just off Eye Lane. It looked like a straight shot up the lane ahead and through the woods. However it didn’t turn out to be that easy!

It started off simple enough. Following a single track lane past some houses.

I could see the high point up ahead beyond the woodland so knew where I needed to be heading.

It was a bit soggy after the giant log!

Just up ahead was a sort of crossroads into two fields.

Junction at field entries

I headed into the left field and followed the woodland up the hill.

Follow the edge of the field

At the top of this field, there was a mixture of a wooden fence, a steel gate all tied up with ropes and barbed wire. It was a little overgrown but there was a way through and you had to go over it to get into the next field.

Cross here into the next field

Anyway, I continued up the next field. At the top of this there was a rickety old wire fence with an extra helping of barbed wire. The trig pillar was in this field but it was just too ropey to tackle from this side.

I followed the hedge along the top of the field and down the other side. There was a stile with the Herefordshire Trail marked on it.

I headed back up the field which was so saturated and slippery that I was not looking forward to coming back down it!

Reached the top… Just…

There it was, the Shuttocks Hill trig point.

It was however a little sunken down in the hedge.

The hedge was a little overgrown and the pillar itself was looking a bit worse for wear.

Top of the Shuttocks Hill Trig Point

Not wanting to slide back down the slope on my arse, I found a way (just about) over the ropey fence. It was passable from the otherside but the wood was extremely slippery. I saved myself a journey back down and up the field at least!

This one was a nice 5k distance out and back from where I parked.

Thanks for reading and good luck with this one if you plan to tackle it!
