The Batchley Farm trig point seemed like it had the makings of a roadside bag. It almost was! I pulled into a driveway off the main road (the A44). There was a house and then a track leading to Batchley Farm.
There was a tractor coming down the lane so I pulled in to some open space by some abandoned farm buildings after the house on the way in. I thought while there was somebody about, I better ask them if it’s OK to visit the trig pillar. The chap in the tractor was just a contractor but he said the landowner Mary wouldn’t mind. Even said we could leave the car where it was. I had planned on pulling in further on up but that was as good a place as any!
However, he said only recently some other trig baggers came and couldn’t find the trig as it was hiden among some overgrown shrubbery. Not another I thought, thiniking back to the Mainstone trig point bag! I couldn’t have another no show, I haven’t gotten over that one still!
Anyway, I headed on up the track and veered of left as the track when right. I had a rough idea of where the Batchley Farm trig point was supposed to be – so started looking. I went throught stingers, brambles, round by a murky pond… Even into another field. I could not find anything!
I wasn’t going to be beaten. After a quick reassessment using the OS Maps app (which would be great if it actually showed you where you were on it as opposed to just where stuff was), cross referencing where I was on Google Maps, I headed into an area I originally walked straight past.
And there was the Batchley Farm trig point, within a barbed wire fenced off section, among all manner of unpleasant foliage!
Quite an easy one to miss, I can see how the previous trig baggers gave up! It wasn’t where you’d expect it to be and hidden from view!
Another one bagged! Check out my other Herefordshire trig point bags here. Also, find me on Instagram here if you’d like to track my progess!
