The Burton Hill trig point was a nice drive and I found somewhere to pull-in nearby. There were two gates on the side of the road with space for a couple of cars. Lots of litter too which was disappointing to see.
I hopped over a gate into a field opposite and headed up along the hedge. This was looked like it was going to burn the calves!
In the top right of the field, there was a fence that was able to be climbed over to get into the woods beyond.
Lots of shotgun shell casings too – wasn’t sure whether to be worried or not seeing these but carried on anyway!
There were a couple of routes to the top along paths but like I always do, I’ll make a beeline to the top and make the walk back leisurely.
Turned out to be a bit challenging though! Steep inclines, lots of loose leaf litter underfoot and the bloody prickly bramble things – tore my legs to bits! Watch out for them – they were everywhere!
The slope seemed pretty relentless but eventually made it to the top – the highest point – but could not see the trig pillar anywhere. I wandered around for ages looking as it was no doubt hiding among the dense woodland but still nothing. I checked the OS Maps app and I was where I needed to be – I thought – but I wasn’t!
It was just off a marked route, so I headed down (yes, downslope) to the path, followed it and then I found it! However, it wasn’t on the highest point around – where I was looking originally was higher up!
Burton Hill trig point in the bag!
I followed the marked route back down as going down the slopes I came up was a daft idea! Well worth the detour as a herd of deer crossed my path! By the time I got my phone out they’d gone but it was a cool sight!
Quite a challenging one in the woods this but a good one nonetheless. Do take a look at my other trig bags around Herefordshire here. Finally, let’s connect over on Intagram too if you like!
