For the Upper Norton Farm trig point bag, I parked in a layby just before the Saltmarshe Castle Park. A short jaunt up the road, there’s a junction to a right turn.
It’s actually a long driveway but there is a sign for a public footpath. Head up this driveway and you get to a house. If you’re a regular reader of these, you’ll know about the experience at the White House Farm trig point bag. If you’re not a regular, in short, the farmer was very, very angry at me for being on their land.
So, to ensure there are no further dramas, if I pass a house, I’ll let them know I’m in the vicinity. I’ll give them a knock to see if it’s OK to bag the trig point.
Anyway, the old boy was super jolly and was more inconvenienced at having to talk to me than if I’d have just gone on. He gave me a few details about where the trig pillar was. He was more than happy to let me bag it. You can’t really win with these! A majority of farmers / landowners could not care less. In fact, there have been a few that are more irate about having to answer the door for such a trivial thing such as ‘I’m here, is that OK?’ than if I’d have just carried on. I mean, I’ve no intention of damaging anything (or trespassing for that matter).
However, on the flip side, we have the White House Farm trig point types – ‘Get the f*ck off my land!’ (Yes, it’s actually a saying, not just a comical, British farming stereotype)!
Only thing the chap said was stick to the edge of the grass field as they were due to cut it and make hay. Always stick to the edges anyway so no problem!
Up a track with a woodland on the left and horses on the right, through a gate, swing left then follow the hedge up the field.
There’s another gate to hop over and then another gate into the field with the trig pillar.
The Upper Norton Farm trig point is sat in the hedge.
The surrounding hedge has been groomed so the trig point is easy to spot. Not quite as buried as some, but if left, it could very well be completely hidden and inaccessible. I caught it at a good time!
Another one to check off!
Made my way back the way I came – didn’t see the old couple on the way back to thank them.
Thanks for reading, check out my Instagram if you get a second too!
