Wormsley Hill Trig Point

The Wormsley Hill trig point was another that involved decent roads and an actual car park – albeit the Herefordshire Golf Club car park! No single track, dirty lanes – a proper B-road with 2 lanes and no abandoning the car in an obscure place nearby!

The car park wasn’t full and it was early so it was a quick in and out before anyone noticed!

I headed up toward St Mary’s Church along an access lane to some farm buildings and houses. I was met by some excitable dogs protecting lambs! However, one of the occupants caught up with me to apologise which was nice. Afterall, he had no reason to, and I was on his land! I thought he was going to ask me what I was doing but he just got on with his day!

I took a left off the lane past some animal enclosures into a field which looked like a bit of an orchard. At the top of this field were two gates side by side.

Go through either and head left – they’re both going in the right direction!

Orchard with gates in the distance

This is where it got interesting! I thought, as you do trig bagging, I’ll head for the top of the hill with the trees! I did – but there was no trig pillar. Had to check on Google Maps! I knew roughly where I was going – turns out I was only a half a mile out!

Over the gate, into the next field and follow the hedgerow. There was a brow in the distance so it was obviously up there somewhere!

I followed the tramlines (learned what they were from Clarkson’s Farm!) which veered right then headed to the top of the hill.

There it was – the Wormsley Hill trig point!

However, it was on the other side of the hedge! I doubled back the way I came to find a way of getting through the hedge. If I had followed the tramlines instead of excitedly heading for the top of the hill, there was a well-trodden access point where the fence had collapsed.

Did a little maintenance as it was a bit overgrown.

Probably be even worse in the summer so I gave you a fighting chance at accessing it if it’s on your list to bag!
