It was a wet, cold and windy Sunday – perfect conditions to bag our first trig point – the Aconbury Camp trig point!
Using the Trig Bagger Herefordshire book I bought from Amazon (link here), I chose one only a few minutes down the road. From what I’ve found on Google, an obvious one just to ease into the whole trig bagging thing! Aconbury Camp trig point was also, coincidentally, number 1 in the book. However, I hadn’t planned on checking them off chronologically! I created a GPX on plotaroute.com just to have a rough idea of where I was going!

I uploaded this to my Coros Apex, parked at the Little Birch Village Hall (Barrack Hill, Little Birch, Hereford HR2 8AZ – click to open in Google Maps) and headed right to the marked footpath route. Just to note, I tackled this trig point early, starting at 10:00am. There was a sign at the village hall asking not to park between midday – 4:00pm so bear that in mind if you’re heading there. I parked up on a Sunday and was gone way before midday!

There was a steady incline, however, a little challenging with all the rain we’ve had! It was very muddy and lots of wet leaves. Up this slope is a gate on the right to access the woods. My Hoka Speedgoat’s took a hammering too but lacked a little grip on the mud. Did have the foresight to wear my Sealskinz which proved to be a worthwhile addition to the kitbag!
I headed straight up the slope. Again, it was wet, cold, windy, muddy and a bit slippery too! It would have been much nicer in the summer but we had to start somewhere!
I continued on the route my Apex watch was telling me to follow. At the top of the slope, the trees cleared and the Aconbury Camp trig point was just to the right… On the highest point in the woods of course!
First trig point of 2023 bagged!
Just to make it interesting, when I plotted the route, I created a loop instead of just going back the way I came. A simple 1-mile route from the village hall. I say simple under less soggy conditions!
I had planned to bag a few more on the day… However the weather just didn’t ease up at all so called it a day.
May seem pointless, driving 15 minutes to park then walk a mile then drive 15 minutes home but it got me out of the house, got me moving and got to explore an area I had never been to in my whole life living in Herefordshire!
