For the Birley Hill trig point bag, I planned to park at the Bush Inn. Just like I did for the Orcop Hill trig point bag parking at the Fountain Inn, get there early and leave before they opened so I was getting in the way of real punters. However, best laid plans and all… The Bush Inn at Bush Bank was indeed closed, but the car park was also cordoned off. Bugger!
However, as I realised the car park was closed, I committed to the left turn before the pub. Handily, there was a layby… If you want to call it that… Or rather a space on the verge opposite a house that I pulled into.
From this parking space, I could see roughly where I needed to head – half a mile up the hill in front of me! I crossed the road and headed right up a lane that curved to the right and just up from there was a narrow lane again on the right. That was my queue to get ready for the burn!
The incline got steeper and steeper – the lane was muddy too. I would hate to drive up it – let alone encounter someone coming in the opposite direction!
Glad to be on foot despite the calf-burning incline! At the brow there was a house on the left and a little route up past it. This joined what appeared to be an actual path. I followed the path and cut through the brambles to correct the direction.
There was a curious sign too… Wonder what that’s about?
The route then opened into a field. Follow this to the left sticking to the edge and then hop over into the next field. Easily done as the fence had collapsed.
Now it was a case of ‘spot the Birley Hill trig point’!
It was in this field somewhere, but with the overgrown shrubbery and trees, it wasn’t going to be an easy spot!
After a bit of aimless wandering, I did find the Birley Hill trig point! Another one in the bag!
I followed a different route back, just to mix it up. I came out just short of the junction I originally turned into, so there’s more than one way to bag the Birley Hill trig point!
