I made a proper day of the Merbach Hill trig point bag! Parking at Arthur’s Stone – that I didn’t even know existed right here on my doorstep! Quite a cool neolithic type structure – like a mini Stonehenge thing!
Chose this spot as it had a little space to park in.
I headed up a long, straight lane afterwards to get the bag underway. The Merbach Hill trig point was about a mile and a half from the car give or take. It’s a straight shot until you get to the bend in the road – head through this gate.
There’s supposed to be the Herefordshire Trail route somewhere – however I had no idea where the path was.
Instead, I just headed straight up. Loads of sheep and the most sheep sh*t I’d ever come across! Anyway, up and over the hill and a sort of track appeared… And on it a fellow trig bagger. Had not expected to encounter anyone on any of these so that was something! He was heading toward Arthur’s Stone so was heading back the way I’d come from.
Through the gate with the map and following a slightly more well-trodden path that lead straight to the Merbach Hill trig point.
Despite the isolated location, the trig point was well cared for. Even had a decorative wreath on top of it. View from the trig pillar we’re pretty good too!
Another one bagged – back a mile and a half to the car!
This was a more interesting bag with great views.
Took a bit of finding though but got it in the end. Probably do this one again in the height of summer or grab a secondary sunset bag as it was a pleasant walk.
